Wylie 5th graders petition for curbside recycling in Abilene
There's new momentum right now to bring curbside recycling to Abilene.
This isn't the first time it's been discussed; in 2010, the city sent out a survey asking residents if they'd be willing to pay $2 a month to pay for the program.
The city reported 443 households returned the survey, and that 55% of those people were against curbside recycling, so the idea was dropped. Now, there's a list moving around town of folks who want to give curbside recycling another shot, and you may be surprised to see who's behind it.
Mattie Smith, Kaylee Beard, and Anna Claire Boone are 5th graders at Wylie Elementary. For this year's Earth Day project, they decided to try and bring on some real change through an online petition and gathering signatures of people who would be willing to support curbside recycling in Abilene.
The girls feel the easier recycling is, the more people would do it. "We thought more people would recycle if they didn't have to drive all the way to the center, so we had this idea and are talked to some people from city council and we made the curbside recycling interest list," said Mattie Smith.
The girls have taken time to learn about similarly sized cities and what people there do to have curbside recycling. "You just put it all in one bin and the garbage trucks pick it up on one day and the next day pick up garbage - so it's the same trucks and on a different day," said Anna Claire. "I hope it works, I hope it works and yeah I hope they really do thing about it and consider it," said Kaylee Beard.
The girls hope to collect signatures for a couple of more weeks and then take what they've gathered to Abilene City Council.

The Paint Center on South 1st and Natural Food Center on South 7th are both hosting copies of the petition for interested folks to come in and personally sign.
