1971: Guitarist Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band is killed in a motorcycle accident in Macon, Georgia, at the age of 24. Allman, best remembered for his expressive slide guitar playing and inventive improvisational skills, formed the band with his younger brother, Gregg Allman, in 1969. After Duane Allman's funeral and some weeks of mourning, the five surviving members of The Allman Brothers Band carried on.
