ABILENE, Texas -

Mitchel Gale leaves Abilene Christian with a massive vacancy at quarterback, and a redshirt Junior is seemingly next in line to take over a Wildcat offense that's traditionally expected to sizzle and pop on a weekly basis.

Enter John David Baker, a San Angelo Lake View product that's seen little meaningful time in his ACU career.

"He's been here forever, he's seen what its supposed to look like. He's never taken a meaningful snap here (as an ACU quarterback). So that's a bit scary on one end," head coach Ken Collums said.

Though his time in actual games is limited, he did take the field in each of last season's games. But coach Collums believes his quarterback is ready.

"He's a fierce competitor and tough guy. He's a little bit more runner and a thrower, so we'll probably look a little bit different than we have in the past," Collums said.

In his senior year at SA Lake View, Baker threw for over 22-hundred yards, and 22 touchdowns. When Collums mentions his ability to run the ball, he's not talking about a simple 2 or 3-yard gain. Baker rushed for 18 touchdowns his senior year.
