Balanced offense keys McMurry women's soccer victory over Oklahoma Christian
The McMurry women's soccer team snapped a five-game losing streak as they defeated the Eagles of Oklahoma Christian 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Edwards Field. The War Hawks used a balanced attack in the contest as four different players registered at least one point in the contest.
McMurry and Oklahoma Christian each had their chances in the first half, but it was the War Hawks and Holliday Williams who struck first. Williams used a pass from Savannah Whitaker in the 41st minute to notch her first goal of the season, and give McMurry the 1-0 lead. Keeper Shelby Sova kept the Eagles at bay, making six saves in the first half to keep the McMurry advantage at 1-0 heading into the half.
Eight minutes into the second half, the War Hawks capitalized again, as they took an Eagle turnover and Destin Connally found the foot of Aleria Luna, who put the ball into the net off the post to expand the lead to 2-0.
In the 62nd minute, Oklahoma Christian used a Callie White goal to cut the lead to 2-1. However, just nine minutes later, the War Hawks would add some insurance off the foot of Savannah Whitaker. A great cross by Aleria Luna found Whitaker who calmly beat the attacking keeper to put the War Hawks up 3-1.
“Aleria and I have a great understand of how eachother plays,” said Whitaker of the goal. “We do our best to not force things and just allow them to naturally happen. We took what the defense gave us on that play, and Aleria played a nice ball that allowed me to score.”
The War Hawks defense would hold tough the rest of the way, keeping the Eagles out of the net for the rest of the game on their way to the 3-1 victory.
