Hardin-Simmons’ baseball team opened American Southwest Conference play with a 15-10 win over Sul Ross State on Friday night at Hunter Field.
The Cowboys won the slugfest that lasted 3:08 and saw the teams combine for over 340 pitches.
HSU took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Troy Nicholson had an RBI groundout, HSU scored on a double steal and also on an RBI single by Chris Matthews.
The lead did not last long as SRSU responded with four runs in the second inning to take the lead. Johnny Campos had a two-run triple and Josh Vasquez and Turner Mattson had RBI singles. SRSU scored a single run in the third on an Ely Gallego RBI double.
Trey Thompson had a solo home run for the Cowboys to right center in the third and SRSU made it 6-4 when Dakota Dill scored on a wild pitch.
HSU busted the game open with a six run fifth inning. Andrew Bell had an RBI single and Caleb Jacques and Marcus Uechi had two-run doubles for the Cowboys.
HSU made it 13-6 with two runs in the sixth. Colson Craddick had a two-run home run in the inning. Dakota Dill had a three-run home run for Sul Ross State in the seventh and Thompson and Nicholson had RBI singles for HSU in the seventh to make it 15-9. SRSU scored on a Vasquez sacrifice fly in the eighth to setup the final score.
Dill had two hits and drove in three for SRSU and Uechi, Nicholson and Thompson each had two hits for the Cowboys.
Neither starter was sharp as Zac Enriquez allowed six runs in four innings and Jordan Dotson allowed five runs in two and two-third innings. Clayton Heise took the loss for SRSU allowing four runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Eric Zamora improved to 5-0 out of the HSU bullpen with three and one-third innings of work. He allowed just one hit and an unearned run. Parker Robinson and Brandon Bollinger also worked out of the HSU bullpen.
HSU is now 10-5 on the year and 1-0 in ASC play. SRSU fell to 5-11 overall and 1-0 in league play. The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
