HSU Hoops Begins Four-Game Road Trip To End Regular Season
Hardin-Simmons’ basketball teams will begin its season-ending road trip on Thursday in Alpine, playing Sul Ross State and continuing on for a Saturday game at Howard Payne in Brownwood.
HSU is tied with Concordia for second place in the ASC West but the Tornados would win all tiebreakers between the two teams after sweeping HSU in the two head-to-head meetings. Howard Payne leads the ASC West and needs just one win in its final three games to secure the right to host the ASC Tournament.
The Cowgirls come into the weekend with a 12-9 record and a 10-5 mark in American Southwest Conference action. Sul Ross State is 1-21 on the year and 0-16 in league play and Howard Payne is 19-3 overall and 14-2 in conference action.
HSU is expected to welcome back senior point guard Coco Cartwright, who has missed the last six games with a knee injury. Alexis Popelar leads the Cowgirls with 18.5 points per game. She needs 14 points to pass Diana Martinez into 10th place in the HSU career scoring charts. She has 1203 career points. At her current scoring clip of 18.5 per game, Popelar has a good chance to get to seventh on the list - passing Martinez, Missy Davis, Melissa Henley and Lauren Harris.
The Cowboys go into the weekend looking to get back on track after a pair of losses last week. HSU is now 13-8 on the year and 10-5 in conference play. Sul Ross State is 5-17 overall and 4-12 in ASC action and Howard Payne is 6-16 and 4-12 in conference action.
HSU is currently in third place in the ASC West standings and are four games behind Mary Hardin-Baylor and one game behind Concordia. Schreiner is in fourth place with an 8-8 conference record.
Eric Taylor leads the Cowboys with 13.3 points per game. Darius Singletary averages 11.7 points per outing and Andy Spears is scoring 10.9 points and hauling down 7.6 rebounds per game.
All four games can be heard on www.hsuathletics.com with Al Pickett on the call.
