HSU men's cross country takes 2nd, women 7th in Concordia

Hardin-Simmons’ men’s cross country team placed second at the Concordia Invitational on Saturday morning.

Chad Caton led the way for the Cowboys with a third-place finish (among attached runners) with a time of 16:21in the 5K race. Paul Demmings placed eighth with a 17:15, Clay Smith was 10th with a 17:31, Jonathon Hollon ran an 18:05 and Chace Copp ran an 18:14 for 16th place finish.

Tyson Denton ran an 18:22 and Daniel Kaplinski ran 18:47 and Luke Wells had a 19:17.

The second-place finish was the best team finish in a race over five teams in the program’s five-year history and the top five runners for the Cowboys are all freshmen.

The Cowboys finished with a team total of 54 which was the best score by any of the Division III schools in the field including four ASC schools. Texas A&M International won the race with a score of 40 points.

The race was the last tuneup for the Cowboys before they run in the ASC Championship on Oct. 27 in Clinton, Miss.

Hardin-Simmons’ women’s cross country team ran with a full team for the first time this season and placed seventh at the Concordia Invitational on Saturday morning at Cedar Park High School.

Junior Julia Holub led the Cowgirls with a ninth-place finish and a time of 20:18 in the 5K run. Audrey Salter ran a 21:42, Maloree Kendall ran a 22:21, Lauren Rodgers posted a time of 23:28 and Laura Brown ran a time of 26:42.

Texas Wesleyan won the race with a total of 39 points, Concordia was second with a 72 and Texas Lutheran had 77 points. HSU finished with a team score of 162.

The meet was the final race before the ASC Championship, which will be held on Oct. 27 in Clinton, Miss.
