There has been consternation in the Jeremy Lin world, which comprises only about half the planet, about the Rockets’ tendency to bench him in the fourth quarter. They had their reasons. For one, it took him awhile to learn to play with James Harden, and, let’s face it, if you want the ball in a player’s hands in crunch time, it’s Harden’s. Also, they had a more reliable closer at point guard in Toney Douglas. But Harden and Lin have learned to play together, like two lead guitarists jamming in a garage band. It just took a while. And then Douglas was traded. Some thought Lin might be right back in the same situation when the Rockets signed veteran point Aaron Brooks last week. But that hasn’t been the case. Lin’s play was crucial in the second half, including the fourth quarter, when the Rockets came from 20 points behind early in the third quarter Friday night against Minnesota at Toyota Center to win, 108-100. Rockets coach Kevin McHale said Lin, like most of the Rockets, played “really bad” in the first half. Lin, however, was one of the leaders of the Rockets’ comeback. He finished with 24 points, eight assists and four steals.
