McM Baseball blanked twice at A&M-International
The McMurry baseball team (18-24) tallied just five base hits over the course of two games as it dropped both parts of a twin-bill with Texas A&M – International on Friday. McM lost the first game 9-0 before falling in a pitchers dual in game two, 1-0.
In game one, the War Hawks scratched together just five base runners as Ruben Zendejas and Nick Marsh collected the only hits in the game. Adam Neubauer reached on a hit by pitch and Cody Howard was walked once.
Reversely, the Dustdevils got to McM for four runs in the second inning, one in the third inning and four more runs in the fourth. TAMIU totaled just nine hits for its nine runs but received a multi-RBI game from Alex Salas, Sean Smedley and Jeff Anderson.
In game two, McMurry's Spencer Smith and TAMIU's Abdel Rivera went toe-to-toe in a game that saw just seven total hits and just one run scored.
In the nine-inning affair, the only run scored came in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single by Alex McKeon, which scored Alex Salas, to give the Dustdevils the 1-0 lead.
Rivera would hold McM to just three hits over the course of the contest and reliever Manolo Mendoza worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the win for TAMIU and hand McM its third-straight defeat.
On the mound, Smith pitched what was arguably one of his best performances of the season. Despite being handed the loss, the senior threw a complete-game, four-hit performance while striking out six in eight full innings.
The War Hawks and Dustdevils will wrap up the series with a nine-inning contest on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a noon start.
