The War Hawks will look to take their third straight series when they host the Falcons of the University of Texas - Permian Basin. McM (13-16) is coming off series victories over St. Mary's and Oklahoma Panhandle State.
In their previous series, the War Hawks took a 2-1 series victory over OPSU by taking games two and three by scores of 4-2 and 8-2, respectively. In the series, starters Aaron Burns and Chase Moreland posted back-to-back, solid outings. In the 4-2 victory, Moreland earned his first win of the season, pitching seven strong innings while allowing just one earned run and three hits while striking out eight batters. Jared Hopper (right) helped secure the victory, pitching 1.2 innings for his second save of the season. The senior closer allowed just two singles while striking out one in earning the save.
In the rubber match, Burns ran his overall record to .500 on the season (3-3) as he went eight strong innings, allowing eight hits, but just two earned runs. Burns also struck out eight while not allowing a walk in the game. Offensively, Ruben Zendejas was the catalyst in the contest, reaching base in all five at bats (3-for-3 with two walks) and scored the first three runs of the game.
In the Falcons' previous contest, UTPB was defeated by the University of the Southwest, 14-7, on Tuesday. In the contest, the Falcons were led by Neil Madsen and Mike Briseno who tallied three hits and an RBI each. Beau Anderson collected two hits and two RBI in the game.
So far this season, the Falcons are led by Madsen, who is hitting .329 on the season. Jordyn Van Atta leads the team in RBI with 14, and Tyler Forney leads the team in hits with 29 and is second on the roster in RBI, collecting ten so far this year.
On the mound, Brett Rogers leads the Falcons' rotation as the only player with more than one win (4-4) and currently has a 2.53 ERA.
For McMurry, Jon Mejia continues to lead the way offensively. Mejia is hitting .370 on the season and leads the team in slugging percentage (.644), RBI (14), doubles (7), and has three home runs on the year, which ranks him first in the Heartland Conference. Zendejas has also been hitting well of late, and has brought his batting average over the .300 mark on the year (.308).
On the mound, Hopper has flourished since being moved to the closing role. Hopper currently leads the team in wins with four, and has gone seven appearances without allowing an earned run. The closer has a 4.07 ERA through 10 appearances and is tied for the team lead in saves.
In the two team's previous series, the Falcons took the 2-1 series victory over the War Hawks in Odessa. McMurry won the first game of the series, 2-1, in an extra-inning affair. The pitching combination of Spencer Smith and Charlie Hejny held the Falcons to just two hits in the contest. The Falcons then took games two and three by scores of 4-0 and 6-2, respectively.
The two teams will play a double header on Friday with the first game starting at 3 p.m. and will follow that with a nine-inning affair on Saturday. First pitch on Saturday is at 1 p.m.
