McMurry University women's basketball head coach Veronica Snow has announced the War Hawks' 2012-13 schedule. McM – in its first season competing as an NCAA Division II school – will take on a 26-game regular season slate.
Snow will have 23 games versus NCAA II members, while also facing three NAIA contests.
“There is no doubt that this will be a challenging schedule,” said Snow. “But our goal is to build a strong program on the Division II level. If we want to be among the best, we have to be willing to stand up and face some of the best, toe-to-toe.”
Although not eligible for the Heartland Conference championship until they reach full NCAA II membership status, the War Hawks women's will play a full 16-game league slate that includes home-and-home contests versus all of the other eight members. Among the Heartland games, McMurry will have contests against Newman University (Kan.), which received votes in last year's final NCAA II rankings.
McMurry will have its annual alumni game at home on October 27 as a tune-up before opening for real on November 9 at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. The team will also play in MSU's tournament on Nov. 16-17, facing Fort Lewis University (ranked No. 17 in the nation in the final 2011-12 NCAA II national poll) and Colorado School of the Mines. The War Hawks will also participate in the West Texas A&M University tournament Nov. 23-24, where their opponents will be Angelo State and host WTAMU.
Snow's team will be the “road warriors” in the early part of the season, playing eight-straight road games before its home opener on December 8 versus Wayland Baptist in a non-league bout. McM is then on the road again for its next four games, but returns to the friendly confines of Kimbrell Arena for eight of its final 13 games.
The War Hawks were a perfect 12-0 on the Ron Holmes Court at Kimbrell Arena and currently own an 18-game home court win streak. McM's last loss in Kimbrell was a 61-58 setback at the hands of Howard Payne University on January 13, 2011.
Snow – in her sixth season at the McM women's basketball helm – will enter 2012-13 needing just one win to reach 100 for her coaching career. Snow is 99-39 (.717) in her previous five campaigns and has never had a season with less than 16 victories. She can also boast two 20-win seasons in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
