The McMurry University volleyball program will play on in the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament, as it won the NCCAA Central Regional Championship, defeating Mid-America Christian, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The War Hawks (20-9) jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking the first set, 25-16. As a team, McMurry collected 18 kills in the set while hitting .250.
After dropping set two, 28-26, McM once again dominated in set three. Playing almost perfect on the offensive side of the net, McMurry collected 16 kills while making just one error, to take the set, 25-15.
The War Hawks put the Evangels away by taking set four, 25-22, and winning the match, 3-1.
Offensively, McMurry was led by M.J. Vickers, who totaled 20 kills for just the third time this season. Vickers was joined in double-digits by Kasi Conners, who notched 11 kills in the contest. Kelsey Harkins added eight kills, while Kayla Hines and Taylor Seaton notched seven and six kills, respectively. Peyton Evans orchestrated the offense nicely, to the tune of 51 assists in just four sets.
Defensively, McM totaled nine team blocks, led by one solo, and seven assisted blocks by Conners. Ayssa Garcia led four in double-digit digs with 22. Bailey Wilson added 14, while Ruby Jane Johnson and Vickers added 12 apiece.
“I'm so proud of the way our girls played in this tournament,” said head coach Cammie Petree. “Every game they just came out ready, and played extremely hard. I couldn't be more pleased of the effort that we put in this weekend.”
With the victory, McMurry earned a spot in the NCCAA national tournament to be held in Florida on November 29-December 1. The tournament will begin with round robin pool-play on Thursday and Friday and will finish with the semi-finals and finals on Saturday, December 1. The top two teams in each pool at the end of round robin play will compete for the title.
