The 10th-ranked Pioneers of Texas Woman's University again rallied late to steal a game from Abilene Christian as two solo home runs helped lift them to a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
In the first game, however, the Wildcats (16-13, 2-3 LSC) were nothing short of brilliant in posting a five-inning, 9-0 victory, which served as Texas Woman's (26-7, 4-1 LSC) first Lone Star Conference defeat of the season.
ACU scored single runs in each of the first three innings before exploding for six two-out runs in the fourth against starter Katie Hines (8-2) and reliever Karissa Hartwig. Junior went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single and three runs, while senior drove in four on her three singles.
Hines started the fourth with consecutive ground outs, but then walked No. 9 hitter , which led to a RBI double by and single from . The hit from Buckley chased Hines from the game, but it mattered little to the Wildcats as their next five batters all reached base. Vaughn drove home Buckley and Smith on her single to right field, while and Vaughn scored on an error by the first baseman.
Senior crusied to the game one victory as she scattered two hits over 5.0 innings with six strikeouts on just 64 pitches.
Unfortunately, Crain (8-7) was not met with the same success in closing game two as she surrendered two runs - one earned - in relief of starter .
Mosley started the fifth having retired the previous nine batters, but with one out, she gave up a solo blast over the left-field wall to No. 9 hitter Haley Colwell that cut ACU's lead to 2-1. Crain then came in from the bullpen and with two outs was hurt by a fielding error by her second baseman and a game-tying RBI triple to the right-center gap by Lizzy Kelly.
Jordan Readicker gave the Pioneers the lead for good an inning later with her solo homer that led off the sixth.
led off the Wildcats' seventh with a walk, but starter Brandie Lander (11-3) got and to pop up before ending the game on Winkfield's ground ball to shortstop.
ACU scored both of its second-game runs in the second inning on back-to-back RBI singles from McNulty and Fitzgerald. After the second, however, the Wildcats recorded just two more hits and one walk.
The Wildcats return to action Tuesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Texas-Permian Basin.
