Pirates 7, Cardinals 1: Rookie Gerrit Cole pitched six dominant innings and Pedro Alvarez homered for the second straight game as visiting Pittsburgh evened the National League Division Series at one game apiece.Cole (1-0) allowed one run on two hits and helped himself with an RBI single to win his fifth consecutive start as the Pirates rebounded from a 9-1 shellacking in Game 1 to even the best-of-five series, which moves to Pittsburgh for Game 3 on Sunday. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft struck out five and set the early tone by retiring 11 in a row after Carlos Beltran's first-inning double. Alvarez pounded a two-run homer off St. Louis starter Lance Lynn (0-1), Starling Marte added a solo shot and Russell Martin had two RBIs as the Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak versus the Cardinals. Lynn lasted only 4 1/3 innings and was charged with five runs on seven hits.Cole made St. Louis pay for intentionally walking Jordy Mercer by smacking a run-scoring single up the middle in the second inning for a 1-0 edge. Alvarez extended it to 3-0 when he hit a bullet over the wall in center in the third, and Pittsburgh added a pair of runs in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Justin Morneau and Marlon Byrd and a run-scoring single by Russell Martin.Yadier Molina's solo shot leading off the bottom of the fifth got the Cardinals on the scoreboard, but the Pirates tacked on an unearned run in the seventh when Martin delivered a sacrifice fly after third baseman David Freese couldn't field Byrd's routine pop fly They made it 7-1 in the eighth on Marte's homer off Shelby Miller. Pirates LHP Francisco Liriano, who went 8-1 at home in the regular season, will oppose Cardinals RHP Joe Kelly in Sunday afternoon's Game 3 in Pittsburgh.
