War Hawks Drop St. Edward's, 101-92
McMurry University had six players score in double figures in rolling to a 101-92 victory over St. Edward's University at the SEU Recreation and Convocation Center. The win improved the War Hawks to 8-2 overall, while the Hilltoppers fell to 10-7.
Stepping into the court for the first time this season minus its leading scorer Kenny Williams (shoulder), the War Hawks took a few minutes to get their footing. St. Edward's raced out to an eight point advantage, 13-5, with just over three-and-one-half minutes into the game.
McM quickly regrouped behind the efforts of junior forward Alfred Perez. Perez picked up some of the slack left by Williams' void, with 12 points and seven rebounds in the opening segment alone. His free throw with 10:50 left in the half tied the game at 23-23.
Two free throws by Kaylim Noel at the 6:38 mark gave the War Hawks their largest lead of the half, 34-29. McM would take a 41-39 advantage into the halftime locker room.
The War Hawks began to put some distance between themselves and the Hilltoppers in the second half. It was senior Takoby Jackson who led the second half assault.
Jackson booked 16 of his McMurry career-best 26 points in the second stanza. On the afternoon, Jackson was 9-of-13 from the field, 4-of-6 from three-point country, 4-of-6 from the free throw line and and also pulled down seven rebounds.
Joining Jackson in double digits was Antonio Bell (19 points), Noel (17 points), Perez (12 points), Connor Robinson (12 points) and Chris Campbell (11 points).
Perez also had a game-high eight rebounds. Noel added two blocked shots.
As a team, McMurry shot an unconscious 81.8 percent from the field (18-22) in the second half alone. On the day, the War Hawks hit nearly 64 percent (30-of-47) overall and were 8-of-13 from long range.
McMurry also held a 14-4 advantage in fast break points.
