Wildcats fall to NM Highlands, 5-4
New Mexico Highlands scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning Sunday afternoon as the Cowboys rallied for a 5-4 win and a four-game series split with ACU in non-conference baseball action at Crutcher Scott Field.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 7-6 on the season, while the Cowboys improve to 4-4 with the win. ACU will be back in action next weekend when it hosts the ACU / Whiten Inn Classic at Crutcher Scott Field. ACU will play single games against Tarleton State (Thursday), Eastern New Mexico (Friday) and Cameron (Saturday) in non-conference games.
The Wildcats led Sunday's game 2-1 before the Cowboys scratched out a two-out run on an RBI single by Cory Falvey to knot the game at 2-2.
ACU, though, answered with two runs in the sixth when Heath Beasley delivered a two-out, two-run single to left field to drive in Travis Schuetze and Chuck Duarte with the go-ahead runs.
Wildcat pitcher Aaron Lambrix -- who was tagged with the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year -- got through the seventh unscathed and retired the first batter of the eighth before giving up a solo home run to left field by Chris Pile to cut the ACU lead to 4-3. He then walked Derek Ward and then gave a up a triple to Falvey that plated Ward to tie the game at 4-4.
After Jarred Middleton was intentionally walked to set up a double play, pinch-hitter Cole Davis pulled a single through the left side to drive in Falvey with what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Oscar Almeida did the rest on the mound for the Cowboys as he retired the final 10 batters in order after giving up Beasley's two-out single in the sixth. Almeida went the final four innings, giving up just three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out three Wildcats to earn the win.
ACU starting pitcher Austin Palmer was solid, going five innings and giving up just two hits and one run while striking out three Cowboys before giving way to Lambrix.
