McMurry University led wire-to-wire in notching its fourth win of the year, knocking off Southern Arkansas University, 86-58, at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center. The victory by the War Hawks (4-7) over the Lady Muleriders (0-9) was the team's third in its last four outings.
The McM squad shot a season-best 42.2 percent (27-64) from the field. The War Hawks were equally potent from the free throw stripe, where they also had season-high team totals for makes (30) and attempts (41). The 86 points was McMurry's best offensive output of the 2012-13 campaign, thus far.
SAU also shot its share from the charity line (40), but converted just 18. Four Lady Muleriders fouled out of the game (as well as two McM players). The two teams combined for 61 fouls.
McM rode the efforts of standout junior forward Keshia Collins to the win. Collins had 18 of her game-leading 25 points in the second half alone as her team added to what was a 41-28 cushion at the intermission. She hit 10-of-16 from the field on the afternoon and also had a team-topping four steals.
Freshman Claire Bruffey had the best scoring game of her young collegiate career, adding 14 points to the McM coffers. Bruffey also had the hot touch shooting, going 4-of-8 from the floor (2-4 from beyond the arc) and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.
Senior forward Jamie Wilson was the third War Hawk in double-digits with 12 points, to go along with eight rebounds. She led the team in scoring in the first half, when she amassed 10 of her points.
Sophomore Bridget Dorn got the start in the middle and responded with a team-high 12 rebounds (nine off the defensive glass). She also tallied five points.
Senior point guard Rikeita Thomas had a season best six assists. Thomas also booked two of McMurry's 13 steals as a unit.
Leading by 13 points at the break, McMurry quickly pushed the advantage to 20 – and beyond – early in the second stanza. A 17-2 run in the first 4:23 of the second period made the score 58-30 and gave McMurry its largest lead until it had a 29 point advantage with just a minute left to play and matters well in hand.
