COLLEGE STATION, Texas -

Dozens of teams converged on College Station with a shot at starting the 2012 football season with an extra state title, but after pool-play only a handful are left with a shot at the hardware.

Wylie, Brownwood, and Merkel are among the teams in the division II championship bracket. Stephenville also earned a spot in the winners bracket with a 3-0 record out of Pool A.

In Pool G, the Wylie Bulldogs went 2-1, with wins against Quanah, and East Bernard. Their one loss came to Glen Rose, 34-28.

You couldn't say Brownwood exactly cruised through pool-play (victories of 28-18, 26-20, and 27-24), but they made it through unblemished.

Down in Pool P, the Merkel Badgers came two points shy of escaping with a 3-0 record. their one loss was a 28-27 decision to McGregor.

Though Eastland, Ballinger, and Comanche failed to earn spots in the championship rounds, they are in the consolation bracket.

Eastland will start play on Friday with Lago Vista. Balliner faces Springtown, and Comanche is up against E. Bernard.

Division I teams Abilene High and Cooper will begin pool-play Friday in College Station.
