ACU expected to send 16 athletes to outdoor championship meet
The ACU track and field teams will compete in their final NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet next week, and they'll do with 16 individual athletes and two relay teams.
The entire field for the championship meets was released Tuesday afternoon by the NCAA, and the Wildcats will send 10 female athletes in 10 events, while the men will send six athletes in three events. Both teams will send their 4x100 relay teams.
The national outdoor championship meet will be May 23-25 at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colo. The Wildcats will be performing for interim head coach Jerrod Cook, who led the ACU teams to a pair of third-place finishes two weeks ago at the Lone Star Conference championship meet in Canyon.
The highest-ranked ACU athlete on either side going into the national meet are former national champion Amanda Ouedraogo on the women's side and Baptiste Kerjean on the men's side, both of whom are ranked No. 2 in the country in their respective events.
Ouedraogo is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the triple jump behind reigning indoor national champion Kearah Danville of Angelo State. Danville is No. 1 in the nation with a mark of 43 feet, 7 inches, while Ouedraogo is No. 2 with an ACU-record 43-6.
Kerjean, meanwhile, is ranked No. 2 in the hammer throw at 217 feet, 11 inches, a little less than eight feet behind national leader Garrett Grey of Ashland, who has a season-best mark of 225-4.
