The Albany Lady Lions sweep of Forsan in the Regional Quarterfinal round of the 2013 playoffs is just the latest pair of wins in one of the most impressive softball seasons in the Big Country. And now the The Lady Lions are one step from the doorstep to Austin.
"I told the girls the other day, we're finally getting to the point where we are a machine" head coach Jimmy Fuentes told KTXS on Wednesday, "we are hitting on all cylinders right now. It's a great place to be."
It certainly is a great place to be but a place that they have been before. In 2011, the team had a magical run to State that came to an unfortunate end in the first round. This Albany squad has on it 5 seniors who remember that run to the big tournament very well. One such senior is shortstop and Missouri signee Kelli Schkade.
"We just get along so well, as you can see we joke around with our coaches a lot but we have good team chemistry," Schkade explained, "but we know once it's time to play it's time to make our minds right and do what we need to do," Schkade said.
That team chemistry is the biggest similarity between Albany in 2011 and Albany in 2013. Windthorst is their next opponent. The Regional Semi is scheduled for Friday, 6:00pm in Graham. If the Lady Lions are the machine coach Fuentes thinks they are, this team's dream of a return to Austin might just become a reality.
