ABILENE, Texas - Kyle Coats has joined the defensive football staff at Hardin-Simmons replacing Jon Loudermilk, who resigned earlier this month to go into private business.
Coats, who will coach defensive backs for the Cowboys, spent last season as a full-time assistant at Trinity University. He coached outside linebackers and special teams for the Tigers.
"We are excited to bring Kyle on to our staff full time," said HSU head coach Jesse Burleson. "He was an outstanding graduate assistant for us and was very organized and detailed. He has great rapport with our players and he is an excellent recruiter."
Prior to his one year at Trinity, he was a graduate assistant at Hardin-Simmons for the 2010 and 2011 seasons where he helped with the strong safeties. He also helped with scout teams for defense and special teams and helped coordinate the weight room.
Coats was a three-year lettermen and two-time academic all-American as a player at Trinity. He was a two-time second-team all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference selection as a linebacker.
Coats is a native of Georgetown, Texas. He has a bachelor of science in Marketing and a minor in physical education from Trinity. He also has a master's of science in Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation Management from Hardin-Simmons. He had a 4.0 GPA in graduate school and a 3.7 GPA as an undergraduate.
