ABILENE, Texas - The ACU Wildcats will close out the home portion of their inaugural season at the NCAA Division I level this weekend by welcoming the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to Crutcher Scott Field for a three-game Southland Conference series.
The Wildcats are 16-25 on the season and 5-10 in league play, while the Islanders are 25-21 overall and 14-7 in the Southland. The first game of the series is set for 6 p.m. Friday, followed by the second game Saturday at 2 p.m. and the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. Friday's game and Sunday's game will be broadcast on 98.1 FM The Ticket.
Corpus Christi – coached by former Abilene Cooper High School standout Scott Malone – is in second place in the Southland, one game behind Nicholls (15-6 in league play), which plays at Southeastern Louisiana this weekend.
The Wildcats are entering the series coming off a 4-3 win over Texas-Permian Basin on Tuesday at Crutcher Scott Field. The winning run scored when freshman outfielder Colton Hall was hit by a pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, driving in the game-winning run.
The Wildcats are led offensively by the 1-2 punch of senior catcher Seth Spivey and freshman shortstop Brandon Grudzielanek. Spivey leads the Southland Conference in hitting at .367, while Grudzielanek is fifth at .353. Grudzielanek leads the Wildcats in RBI with 30, while Spivey is second with 29.
ACU head coach Britt Bonneau will send left-handers Ty Walker and Brady Rodriguez to the mound on Friday and Saturday, respectively, before finishing up the series with Garrett deMeyere.
Walker will be making only his second start and 12th appearance of the season on Friday and carries a 0-0 record and 9.60 ERA into the start. Rodriguez will be making his fourth start and 20th appearance on Saturday and will take a 1-3 record and 5.56 ERA into the game. deMeyere is 4-5 with a 4.21 ERA and will be making his 13th start and 14th appearance on Sunday.
Corpus Christi is led offensively by Brandon Tierney, who is hitting .359 with three home runs and 28 RBI. Corpus Christi is third in the league in hitting at .289.
The Islanders will send right-hander Matt Danton (6-2, 3.13 ERA) to the mound on Friday, followed by left-hander Trevor Belicek (3-5, 4.12 ERA) on Saturday and right-hander Dalton D'Spain (1-0, 3.00 ERA) on Sunday.
Following this weekend's series, ACU will play its final 10 games of the season on the road: May 9-11 at Oral Roberts, May 16-18 at Incarnate Word, May 20 at Arizona State and May 23-25 at Arizona.
