ACU Sprinter Farquharson qualifies for 100-meter finals at Drake Relays

ABILENE, Texas - Sophomore Johnathan Farquharson enjoyed a successful afternoon at the Drake Relays Friday as he followed a sensational qualifying run in the 100-meter dash with a third-place finish in the 4x200-meter relay.

Pitted in the same heat as one of the nation's fastest collegians in Baylor freshman Trayvon Bromell, Farquharson today clocked a (2.0) wind-aided prelim time of 10.44 seconds to qualify sixth for Saturday's afternoon finals. He will be joined there tomorrow by Bromell, the prelim winner with a wind-aided 10.16, plus TCU sophomore Ronnie Baker, Georgia senior Johnathan Smith, Iowa rookie O'Shea Wilson, Kent State sophomore Wayne Gordon, Thurgood Dennis of UW-Eau Claire and Baylor's Everett Walker.

Baker posted the fastest legal time of 10.29 in the second of four heats, while runners in the first heat, including Smith (10.38) and Dennis (10.48) ran against the wind (-0.6).

Several hours later, Farquharson was back on the Drake Stadium track competing in the first 4x200-meter relay of his ACU career alongside freshman Maliek Golden, junior Osei Allyene-Forte and senior anchor Darian Hogg. Together they won their heat and placed third overall with a time of 1:24.69 that was good enough to beat teams from Iowa, UW-Milwaukee, UTEP and eight others.

The only teams faster than ACU in this race today were first-place Georgia (1:22.50) and runner-up Purdue (1:23.07), both of which were featured in the third and final heat. The Wildcats' competition in their heat included the aforementioned Miners and Panthers, plus squads from Loyola-Chicago, Northern Iowa and Air Force.

Farquharson will be the third of three Wildcats competing Saturday at Drake as he will follow senior Baptiste Kerjean in the hammer throw and junior Daniel Block in the 800-meter run.
