ACU's Carpenter named LSC Male Athlete of the Year

RICHARDSON, Texas - Abilene Christian's Alex Carpenter and Texas Woman's Katie Hines were tabbed the 2013 Lone Star Conference Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively.  The awards were announced Wednesday following a vote of the league's sports information directors.

Carpenter was the top male choice in front of West Texas A&M football standout Dustin Vaughan.

Hines earned the women's award just ahead of ACU track & field standout Amanda Ouedraogo and Tarleton State two-sport (volleyball/track & field) star Nikki McNorton.

A four-time all-America, Carpenter completed his ACU career with 20 collegiate tournament wins. His victory total is believed to be the NCAA record for all divisions, surpassing the previous record of 16 set by PGA legend Phil Mickelson. The senior won five collegiate tournaments this season, including four straight spring events. Carpenter received his fourth consecutive LSC Player of the Year award, and he became the first Wildcat golfer to win ACU's Paul Goad Award, which is presented annually to the school's top student-athlete. Carpenter carded 33 rounds in the 60s and won two league championships during his four-year career. He has also qualified for two Palmer Cup teams during his ACU tenure, and he won the Southern Amateur in July 2010. After winning four tournaments as a freshman, Carpenter received the Phil Mickelson Award as the Most Outstanding Freshman in NCAA Division II men's golf. He earned the Jack Nicklaus Award as the NCAA Division II Player of the Year after winning seven of 14 tournaments as a sophomore.

Hines rewrote the record books while helping the TWU softball team to new heights. She led the Pioneers on offense during the season of "firsts" – first LSC championship, first LSC Tournament championship, first South Central Super Regional championship and first trip to an NCAA championship tournament by any TWU team. Hines led the conference in home runs (25) and a set a new TWU single-season record while tying the LSC record. Her home run total ranked second in nation. Hines also set a new TWU and LSC single-season record for RBI with 85 and was named second team All-American by both NFCA and Daktronics. She was also named LSC Player of the Year, first team All-LSC, LSC All-Tournament Team and Capital One Academic All-America first team. Hines finished the season with a .393 batting average, .845 slugging percentage, .484 on base percentage, 18 doubles, 48 runs and 174 total bases. She also appeared in the circle in 24 games and posted an 11-3 record, 3.12 ERA, 56 strikeouts and .272 opponent's batting average.
