ACU's Renner finishes 3rd at Southland Championships

McKINNEY, Texas - ACU junior Corbin Renner capped the Wildcats' first season at the NCAA Division I level Wednesday afternoon by finishing third in the individual medalist race at the Southland Conference championship golf tournament.

As a team, the Wildcats finished eighth as they capped their first season at the NCAA Division I level by shooting rounds of 299-313-316 for a 928 total. Sam Houston State won the team championship by shooting rounds of 290-292-296 for an 878 total over the par-72,  7,346-yard Dye Signature Course at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.

Defending champion Southeastern Louisiana was second at 884 (297-298-289) with  Stephen F. Austin (299-293-306) and Central Arkansas (296-300-302) finishing tied for third at 898. Lamar rounded out the top five at 910 (300-304-306).

Renner finished third at 2-under-par 214 after posting rounds of 71-71-72, four shots behind conference champion Zach Cabra of Sam Houston State, who carded rounds of 69-69-72 for a total of 6-under-par 210. Pep Angles of Central Arkansas – who had the individual lead after two rounds – finished second at 5-under-par 211 after shooting rounds of 68-68 the first two days before blowing up to a 3-over-par 75 Wednesday.

Renner was on pace to post a number that could have given him the conference's individual championship by recording five birdies on the front nine: at par-5 third, the par-4 fourth, par-3 fifth, par-5 seventh and par-3 eighth to finish the front nine at 5-under-par 31. However, he bogeyed No. 10, double-bogeyed No. 11 and bogeyed No. 12 to fall to 1-under-par for the round just three holes into the back nine. He would go on to bogey No. 15 to fall back to even par, which is where he finished Wednesday.

Senior Trey Sullivan capped his Wildcat career by finishing tied for 16th in the medalist standings with a three-round total of 227 (76-73-78), while Kyle Karnei finished tied for 53rd at 245 (78-83-84). Kaden Walters (55th at 247) and Luke Carpenter (59th at 259) were the Wildcats' other two finishers.
