ABILENE, Texas - Five players scored in double figures as McMurry University breezed past Open Bible College, 91-59, in Clif Carroll's much-anticipated debut as War Hawks' head coach.
"We struggled right off the bat and let them hit a couple three pointers and had four-straight turnovers. After that we cleaned it up, the ball really started to move well," Carroll said following the game. "We had 16 assists to five turnovers in the first half and the group really played unselfish."
OBC (0-2) started off fast and a Trey Lindsay 3-pointer at the 17:14-minute mark opened up an 11-2 lead. The War Hawks fought back and a Will Adams (Philadelphia, Pa. /Baltimore C.C.) jumper at the 13:20-minute mark gave McM an 18-17 lead – a lead the War Hawks would not surrender.
McM started to run away with the game late in the first half. Kourtney Goff (Rochester N.Y./Southern Illinois University) nailed a trey ball with 51 seconds remaining, and hit a second 3-pointer as time expired and McMurry went into halftime with a 62-29 lead.
The War Hawks led by as much as 41 points in the second half and cruised to clinch the win.
Alfred Perez (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins HS) and Adams each scored 15 points, but Brandon Golden (Austin, Texas/Coastal Bend College), Thiago Randazzo (Brasilla, Brazil/Impact Academy) and Goff each chipped in 14, which is an offensive output that Carroll wants to see.
"That's the way I like it," Carroll said. "I don't really want a guy to score 30 points a game because it's easier to guard. When you have guys come at different angles it's hard to prepare for. I'm proud to see the guys share the ball."
The win was Carroll's first as a head coach and he is excited to see what the season brings.
"They always say 'You can't win them all if you don't win the first one,'" Carroll said. "I couldn't be happier to be a McMurry War Hawk. I just hope to live up to the expectations (of the program) and carry it on."
