WICHITA, Kan. - Four players scored in double figures, but McMurry University couldn't solve Newman University and fell 68-67 in Heartland Conference action at Fugate Gymnasium.
The game was highly contested from the opening tip.
The first half saw a total of seven lead changes and the War Hawks entered intermission with a 36-30 advantage.
McM opened the second stanza on a 13-8 run and a pair of Connor Robinson (Austin, Texas/Bowie HS) free throws put the War Hawks 49-38 with 16 minutes remaining on the clock.
However, from there the Jets (8-14, 5-9 HC) gradually chipped away at the lead and a Perryonte Smith 3-pointer with 5:44 remaining in regulation gave the Jets a 60-58 lead – their first of the second half.
The teams traded baskets the next four minutes and with 46 seconds remaining Brandon Golden (Austin, Texas/Coastal Bend College) drove to the basket and drew contact and converted the layup. He hit the ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play, which gave McM a 67-66 lead.
With 18 seconds to go Alex Lewis (Converse, Texas/Tempe College) fouled Jack Pyle, who subsequently hit a pair of free throws to put NU up 68-67.
Lewis attempted a 3-pointer as time expired, but couldn't convert.
Golden scored a game-high 17 points and Jordan Holmes (Silsbee, Texas/Silsbee HS) added 12 of the bench.
The War Hawk have dropped two-straight and lost seven of their past 10 games.
McM (10-12, 5-8 HC) will return to the hardwood next Saturday at St. Edward's University.
