College Track and Field: Kerjean shatters weight throw personal record at Oklahoma meet

NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Baptiste Kerjean launched the weight 62 feet, 6 inches (19.05 meters) in defeating seven competitors Saturday at Oklahoma's J.D. Martin Invitational.

Kerjean's throw was a personal best by more than two feet and is the third best mark in Abilene Christian history. His previous record of 60-6.5 (18.45m) was recorded Feb. 2, 2013 at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open and qualified him for the NCAA D-II Championships, where he placed 11th.

The only two Wildcats ranked higher than Kerjean in this event are Glenn Griffin, who set the varsity record of 65-0 (19.81m) in March of 1997 and Cliff Felkins, who held the school record for the better part of a decade after registering a toss of 63-4 (19.30m) in Lubbock in 1987.

Kerjean recorded his winning throw on his first attempt and then hit 60-11 (18.58m) on his second try before fouling on his final four attempts. Oklahoma freshman Charles Nguyen placed a distant second with a top effort of 57-1 (17.40m), while Wildcat sophomore Jelani Rainey was third (52-7.5 / 16.04m) and senior Aaron Bynum came in seventh (46-7.5 / 14.21m).

In the shot put, sophomore Joshua Bloom placed third behind Oklahoma's Austin Perry and Tyler Sergent with a personal indoor record of 50-9.5 (15.48). Bloom recorded his top throw on his third attempt, which was five feet further than his best from 2013 (45-7 / 13.89m).

On the track, freshman Ramesheon Marine tied her personal best in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles with a fifth-place time of 8.90 seconds and sophomore Luke Woods just missed cracking the school's all-time top-10 performance list with his 60 hurdle mark of 8.56. Davy Manga currently occupies the 10th-fastest time in ACU history at 8.53 seconds.

Woods finished fourth overall in the hurdles and recorded a shot put PR of 39-7 (12.06m).

Marine came in third in the long jump with a distance of 17-00.50 (5.19m), placing behind Oklahoma freshman Aatiyah Henry (17-6.75 / 5.35m) and Central Oklahoma senior Madison Berryman (17-4 / 5.28m).

The Wildcats return to action next Friday and Saturday for the Masked Rider Open hosted by Texas Tech.
