Cowboys drop pitching duel 1-0

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons and Chapman locked up in a pitcher's duel at Hunter Field on Friday and Chapman came up with the big two-out base hit in the 10th inning for a 1-0 win to even the non-conference baseball series at 1-1.

James Simmons for HSU and Braden Riddle for Chapman were brilliant all night. Simmons worked all 10 innings and allowed just four hits and one run and Riddle tossed the shutout to earn the win. He allowed six hits and struck out 10. Simmons threw just 95 pitches and Riddle had 147 on the night.

Chapman got the lone run it needed in the 10th inning. With one out Connor Battaglia hit a ball that took a high hop to shortstop that Jon Finney had to wait to come down for an infield single. Battaglia moved to second on a wild pitch and after a fly out scored on an RBI single by Jeff Ortega.

Simmons had set day essentially 24 in a row before Battaglia's ball. Eddie Aguayo singled in the third inning during that run but was immediately erased on a double play.

HSU left nine runners on base in the game, including six in scoring position. Andrew Bell had two hits for HSU and Ortega had two hits to pace Chapman.

HSU fell to 18-12 with the loss and Simmons fell to 4-4. Chapman improved to 12-16 and snapped a seven-game losing skid. Riddle improved to 4-2 with the win.

The teams will close the series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
