Cowboys hold first practice under the lights at Shelton Stadium

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons welcomed over 150 players to its 2014 preseason football camp on Thursday evening. The Cowboys practiced on the new turf for the first time and also had a night practice for the first time.

"We're excited to get back on the, I want to say grass, but it's the turf," said fourth-year head coach Jesse Burleson. "You build all year for this day and we are excited about the team and what we can do this year."

One of the main components of fall camp will be to settle on a quarterback. Evin Abbe, Ryan Breton and Weston Garner, all of whom are in the second year in the program, will have a three-way battle for the job.

"We pay attention to it, but we're confident in all three guys," said offensive captain Jimmie Simpson. "We have trust the coaches will make the best decision for our team. They all three can do the job, it is a matter of which one takes control."

The Cowboys return 108 career starts on the defensive side of the ball between 17 different guys. They will have a new defensive coordinator in Zach Wilkerson.

"We have some guys that have been in the battle against tough opponents, that helps with the transition," said Burleson. "Coach Wilkerson is one of the smartest defensive football coaches I have ever been around and he brings enthusiasm to that side of the ball."

HSU opens the season on Sept. 6 at Southwestern at 7 p.m. in Georgetown.
