THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Amalia Acorda-Fey hammered home a rebound off her own miss in the second overtime to push Puget Sound past Hardin-Simmons, 1-0, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
HSU weathered an early storm from the Loggers. Lexi Stinson saved a shot on target :36 into the match and then saved another shot at the 9:33 mark. At that point, UPS had taken four shots and the Cowgirls had barely seen the ball.
The Cowgirls settled down and Taylor Thigpen put a couple of shots on target that Casey Thayer saved. Each team only had one shot the rest of the half and both were blocked.
HSU had most of the possession in the second half and out shot UPS 8-1 in the half.
Thigpen had a shot saved in the 56th minute and Caitlin Cramer's corner header was also saved by Thayer. Thayer also saved a Courtney Cramer header in the 81st minute and Julianne Kucera had a look with 4:16 to play that sailed high.
HSU had the only three shots of the first overtime. Thayer saved a Thigpen shot 1:32 in, Devon Howard had a shot blocked and Caitlin Cramer's shot in the box was blocked.
UPS got free early in the second overtime and Acorda-Fey got off a shot that was blocked in the box, she get the deflection and buried into the net to send the Loggers to the Sweet 16.
HSU out shot UPS 14-8 and 6-3 on goal. Stinson had two saves for HSU and Thayer had six saves for UPS.
It was the second time this season that the Loggers beat the Cowgirls 1-0. HSU finished the year with a 16-2-1 record. UPS improved to 17-2-2.
It was the final game for eight HSU seniors. The unit had a career record of 88-5-4, won four American Southwest Conference titles and an NCAA title.
