Cowgirls sweep Howard Payne on Senior Day

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' softball pushed its home winning streak to 13 games with a American Southwest Conference doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne, 5-2 and 7-0, on senior day Thursday afternoon at Ellis Field.


Game 1

HSU scored single runs in each of the first three inning and two more in the fourth and held on for a 5-2 victory.

Mac Clay, the only four-year senior for the Cowgirls, had a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Emily Hardaway helped her own cause with an RBI single in the second and Braleigh Middleton had an RBI single in the third.

Clay made it 5-0 in the fourth with a two-run single. HPU scored single runs in the sixth and seventh on an RBI single by Morgan Ashmore and an HSU error.

Sarah Truelove and Sydnie Darden had two hits each for the Cowgirls and Shandi Winstead had two hits for HPU.

Hardaway worked five shutout innings for the Cowgirls to improve to 8-8 on the year. Lara Ammermann worked the final two innings.

Tayler Rushing took the loss for HPU to fall to 6-15 on the year.


Game 2

Senior Keeley Lowrance was near perfect for the Cowgirls. The righthander from Eastland worked six perfect innings, before walking the leadoff batter Jessica Morales to lead off the seventh. Pricilla Patino then added the lone hit for the Lady Jackets on a pitch that was in her eyes that she tomahawked past third.

Lowrance recorded the final two outs to settle for a one-hitter. She allowed just two base runners and stuck out a season-best 12 batters to improve to 10-4. She transferred to HSU from Howard Payne in the offseason.

HSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Kara LeLeux's sixth home run of the season a towering shot to straight away center field.

The Cowgirls added four runs in the fourth inning. Carol Swindell had an RBI single, Sarah Truelove had an RBI single and two runs scored on an error.

HSU had the chance to end the game in the fifth inning on the run rule. The first five batters of the inning singled, including Braleigh Middleton's two-run single. The

Cowgirls loaded the bases with no one out but HPU turned a double play and another ground out ended the inning.

LeLeux, Swindell and Carley Willis had two hits each for the Cowgirls.

HSU is now 20-14 on the year and 17-12 in American Southwest Conference play. HPU fell to 6-27 overall and 5-24 in league play. The teams will close out the series with a single game at noon on Friday.
