ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team put together its most complete game of the season and beat crosstown rival and Division II opponent McMurry, 4-1, on Thursday afternoon at a cool and rainy HSU Soccer Complex.
The Cowboys dominated possession most of the game and converted on two corner kicks. HSU outshot the Warhawks 22-7 overall and 14-2 on goal. HSU had 12 corner kicks in the game.
HSU scored its first goal in the 15th minute when Dustin Beal headed home a Laurent Maksoud corner kick for his first goal of the year.
The game stayed 1-0 through halftime but Kevin McNeal found the back of the net in the 50th minute off a nice pass from Maksoud, McNeall beat his man and buried his second goal of the year.
Taylor Jackson scored off a Maksoud corner in the 69th minute to make it 3-0.
McMurry scored its only goal off a free kick when David Cato scored off the Travis Allen kick.
The Cowboys scored the final goal in the 89th minute, when redshirt freshman Rory McCullough, playing in his first game in 15 months after two knee surgeries was able to chip a rebound off a Colyn Moore shot over the goalkeeper's head for a goal.
Blake Crum earned the win in goal for the Cowboys and Neil O'Sullivan had 10 saves in the game.
HSU is now 2-3-1 on the year and McMurry fell to 0-3-1. HSU will be off until next weekend when it travels to Clarksville, Ark., to play Ozarks in the American Southwest Conference opener.
