FARMER'S BRANCH, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' softball team fell 6-3 to Texas-Dallas and 9-8 to Mississippi College in the first day of the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament on Friday at Oran Good Park in Farmer's Branch.
UTD jumped to a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. All three runs came as a result of a Cowgirl error in the inning and were unearned.
The Cowgirls tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning. Tera Davis started the rally with a two-out double. Nathalie de la Torre was then hit by a pitch and Sarah Truelove had an RBI single up the middle. Sydnie Darden singled to load the bases and Mac Clay had a two-run double.
The Comets scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to setup the final score. Jordan Bratcher had an RBI single, Hannah Creech an RBI double and Rachel Riley an RBI single in the inning.
Brittany Acosta (1-3) took the loss for the Cowgirls, allowing three earned runs in five and one-third innings of work. Carol Swindell worked the final two outs.
Jessie Richardson improved to 1-0 with a complete-game effort for UTED. She scattered six hits and allowed three earned runs.
Against Mississippi College the Cowgirls jumped out to a four-run lead in the top of the first inning. Truelove and Darden started the game with back-to-back walks and Clay had an infield single to load the bases. With one out Julia Bradley had a two-run double to left center and Clay scored on a wild pitch. Bradley then scored on the back end of a double steal to make it 4-0.
MC responded with five runs in its half of the inning. Kimmie Conley and Catherine Brand had RBI singles, Kaye Donnelly had a two-run triple and Carly Donovan had an RBI double.
HSU retook the lead in the third on a two-run home run by Carley Willis. MC tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI double by Macey Lee and a sacrifice fly by Conley. Bethany Fletcher had an RBI single in the fifth to give MC n 8-6 lead.
The Cowgirls tied the game in the seventh. Clay led off the inning with a home run and Willis followed with a walk. Ashten Huddleston had a one out walk and Terra Davis had a sac bunt to put runners at second and third. Willis came around to score on a wild pitch.
MC won the game in the seventh thanks to three Cowgirl errors. Donnelly and Donovan both reached on error's to start the inning. Whitney Enis, a former HSU basketball player, pinch ran for Donnelly and moved to third on a sac bunt. After a flyout, MC scored when Willis misplayed a grounder and Enis came in to score.
Acosta started and worked the first inning, allowing five runs. Carol Swindell relieved her and allowed just two earned runs over the final five and two-third innings but took the loss to fall to 1-4.
Clay and Bradley had two hits each for HSU. Donnelly had two hits for MC.
Conley allowed eight runs on six hits and 10 walks for MC but earned the win.
HSU is now 2-7-1, UTD improved to 2-0-1 and MC is now 1-4. HSU plays LeTourneau at 10 a.m. and East Texas Baptist at 3 p.m. on Saturday to conclude the tournament.
