ABILENE, Texas - The Hardin-Simmons University Spurs Dance Team attended the Universal Dance Association (UDA) Collegiate dance camp July 12-15.
UDA is the largest and most prestigious dance association in the nation. Among the collegiate teams attending this camp were University of Texas, Baylor, University of Oklahoma, Louisiana Tech, University of Houston, Lamar University and more. HSU was one of two Division III university dance teams in attendance.
This dance camp is an intensive four days of individual skills assessments, choreography, team evaluations, team building, master classes and more from professional dance instructors.
At this camp teams are encouraged but not required to bring a home routine and their own school's fight song to compete. Dancers are also taught three routines in three different categories. On the last two days of camp, the dancers are evaluated on the routines they learned as individual dancers.
The Spurs Dance Team brought and competed both a home routine, the school fight song, and the dancers learned choreography and were judged individually for three difference dances; Jazz, Hip Hop, and Pom.
HSU placed second in the Home Routine, placed superior for the Fight Song routine, and earned Most Improved Team (from the school's first appearance at UDA dance camp to this year's appearance). HSU has previously attended UDA camp three times.
For the three dances they learned, they earned 12 superior individual awards and 11 excellent awards as dancers.
