McM Baseball players honored by NCCAA & Heartland

ABILENE, Texas - With the McMurry University baseball season ending just last weekend with a second place finish in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Region tournament, post-season honors have been announced for War Hawk (26-28) team members Zack Hagan, Kyle Sargent and Joel DePorte. The trio was honored by accolades from both the NCCAA, and the Heartland Conference.

Hagan (Round Rock, Texas) was voted second team NCCAA All-Central Region and second team All-Heartland Conference for the 2014 campaign. Hagan, a junior outfielder, led the McMurry regulars with a .304 batting average and appeared in 51 of the team's 54 games. He led McM in hits (56), RBI (21), stolen bases (7) and sacrifice flies (4).

Sargent (Weatherford, Texas), a junior shortstop, was tabbed as second team All-heartland Conference. Sargent led the War Hawks by appearing in 52 of 54 games for the team.  He had a .324 on-base percentage as the team's leadoff man and also hit .292 on then season.  He shared the team lead for hits (56) with Hagan and also scored a team-leading 31 runs, while smacking six triples (also high on the team).

DePorte (Fremont, Calif.), a senior right-handed pitcher, was both a second team All-Heartland Conference pick, as well as honorable mention NCCAA All-Central Region. DePorte was the anchor of the War Hawks' pitching staff, leading the team in virtually every category:  victories (9), innings pitched (105 1/3), appearances (16), starts (15), complete games (6), strikeouts (65) and fewest walks (8).  He also had the second-lowest ERA on the team (and lowest among the starting rotation) at 2.56. He set a McMurry record for control by averaging a base on balls every 13.17 innings pitched.
