ABILENE, Texas - It was only fitting to happen on Senior Day.
McMurry University fought past the University of Arkansas-Forth Smith 3-2 (25-19, 25-20, 16-25, 21-25 and 15-7) in a five-set thriller that would make Hollywood jealous.
"I couldn't have asked from a better day and it was absolutely exciting," McM head volleyball coach said following the match. "We need to work hard every point and I told the girls that every point counts and they took that to heart. The girls did what I know they're capable of doing and I'm excited for them."
The War Hawks soared out of the gates and emphatically won sets one and two and gained momentum.
However, UAFS (19-8, 14-2 Heartland) proved why its sits atop the Heartland Conference standings.
The Lions didn't blink an eye and came roaring back and won sets three and four to force the final and fifth set.
UAFS opened the fifth set with a 4-2 lead, but McM scored 13 of the next 18 points to shock the Lions.
Senior and Abilene native and Abilene High School graduate Kasi Conners helped out with 11 kills and hit .226. She's thrilled to have her final game at Kimbrell Arena end with a win.
"It's completely amazing that this match ended the way it did," said Conners, who will graduate in December. "To beat the top team in conference is special and I'm proud to play with this team."
Senior Peyton Evans finished with 14 kills, 20 assists and 10 digs for her third-straight triple-double.
Evans (Riverton, Utah/Western Texas College) echoed Conners' comments.
"This is just a really good group," Evans said. "The reason we won is because we trust each other and communicate well. We'll enjoy this as a team as use this win as a spring board for the rest of our season."
Kayla Hines (Robinson, Texas/Robinson HS) chipped in 12 kills and helped out with seven digs.
Michelle Walker led UAFS with a match-high 19 kills.
The War Hawks (13-14, 9-7) winners of three-straight travel to UT-Permian Basin Thursday and conclude its regular season Nov. 16 at Lubbock Christian University.
