MEN'S COLLEGE HOOPS: Cardinals Use Fast Start to Upend War Hawks, 83-56

SAN ANTONIO - University of the Incarnate Word started fast and toppled McMurry University, 83-56, Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Convocation Center.

The Cardinals (8-1) started the game on a 9-0 run and the War Hawks spent the rest of the night playing catch-up.

The War Hawks found open looks in the first half, but couldn't get shots to fall. McM shot 23 percent (9-of-39) from the field, while UIW was 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from the floor, including a smoldering 54 percent (6-of-11) from beyond the arc.

UIW received a significant boost from its bench in the first half with 12 points, while McM's bench contributed five points. UIW also scored 10 fast-break points.

The second half was more of the same. McMurry shot 32 percent (12-of-37) from the field, but the War Hawks' defense improved and held UIW to 29 percent (10-of-24) from the floor.

McM fought toe-to-toe with UIW in the paint, outscoring the Cardinals 30-22. However, the War Hawks were outrebounded 54-48.

Junior Alex Lewis (Converse, Texas/Temple College) scored a team-high 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

Kyle Hittle scored a game-high 32 points to lead the Cardinals.

The War Hawks (4-3) return to action Tuesday evening at Tarleton State University. Tip is set for 8 p.m.
