ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University's men's basketball team won its second-consecutive game to open the 2013-14 season, topping Sul Ross State University, 76-72, at Kimbrell Arena in a non-conference bout. The War Hawks (2-0) led by 10 points at the intermission, before withstanding a second-half surge by the Lobos (0-2).
McM held its biggest advantage of the game with 5:32 left in the game as Kourtney Goff canned a short jumper to give the War Hawks a 13-point lead, 64-51.
But Sul Ross battled back, thanks to the deft shooting of Trey Richardson, who had 18 of his 20 points in the second half, including six buckets from beyond the arc. It was Percy Settles' (21 points) layup with just 27 seconds left in the game that knotted things at 72-72.
With just 12 seconds left, Goff pulled up at the top of the key and calmly drained the jumper to give McM the 74-72 lead, eliciting a timeout by McM head coach Clif Carroll to set his defense.
McM pressured the inbound pass and SNU's Luke Taylor launched a desperation three-point attempt that was not close, with McMurry's Connor Robinson hauling in the rebound and drawing a foul from the Lobos. Robinson sank both charity shots for the 76-72 final score.
Goff shared highpoint honors by also tallying 21 points, hitting 7-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free throw stripe. Goff also had seven rebounds, six on the defensive end.
Robinson had similar numbers, with 20 points on an 8-for-11 night shooting and a game-high nine rebounds. Robinson was also the McM assist leader with four.
Alfred Perez added 14 points and Brandon Golden 12 to round out the War Hawks' double-digit scorers.
Both teams shot well from the field. Sul Ross hit nearly 51 percent (31-61), while McMurry was close to 47 percent (29-62). McM held a slight advantage on the glass, 36 to 33.
The real difference came at the free throw line as McMurry went 14-for-20 and the Lobos were just 1-of-7.
