AUSTIN, Texas - For 75 minutes the McMurry University men's soccer team pushed No.4-ranked St. Edwards's University to the brink.
However, the Hilltoppers proved in the waning moments of the second half why their program is among the best in the nation.
Daniel Riley broke a 1-1 tie at the 76-minute mark and the Hilltoppers upended the War Hawks 3-1 Monday afternoon in Heartland Conference action.
The first half produced a combined 13 shots on goal, but neither team found the back of the net.
The second half saw the same stat line, but it was a different story. There were a combined 13 shots on goal, but four found the back of the net.
Anderson McDaniel scored on a free kick at the 64-minute mark to put the Hilltoppers up 1-0.
The War Hawks responded 10 minutes later when James Ness (Newcastle, England/Cloud County CC) converted a penalty kick to notch it at 1-all.
The McM defense and senior goalkeeper Neil O'Sullivan (Saffron Walden, England/Cloud County CC) frustrated SEU (9-2-1, 5-0 Heartland) throughout, but the Hilltoppers' offense finally broke out late. Riley's goals at the 76-minute and 87-minute marks clinched the win.
McM (4-8-1, 2-3 Heartland) returns to the pitch Saturday against Lubbock Christian University. Game time is set for noon at Edwards Field.
