ABILENE, Texas - Abilene Christian and top-ranked Delta State combined for 28 hits Wednesday afternoon at Crutcher Scott Field, but it was the Wildcats who finished on top, 10-4, to salvage a split of their two-game series.
led the Wildcat offense with a 3-for-4, four-RBI effort that included a bases-clearing triple as part of ACU's seven-run sixth. (2-for-4) and (2-for-4) also recorded multi-hit games as the Wildcats improved to 12-9 on the season.
The loss, meanwhile, dropped Delta State to 17-4.
ACU got its offense rolling in the third behind Schuetze's two-out single that chased starter Drew Milligan (1-1) from the game. The next Delta State pitcher, Casey Greene, intentionally walked , but that move backfired when , and Giusti all followed with run-scoring hits that built a 3-0 lead for ACU.
The score remained that way until the sixth when the Statesmen plated a two-out unearned run vs. (2-3).
ACU, however, would put the game out of reach in the bottom of that inning after sending 11 men to the plate against three Delta State relievers. delivered the first big hit - a two-run single that plated Chuck Durate and - and then Schuetze followed with a RBI single through the left side that made it 7-1. Schuetze was on base along with Macy and Salazar when Giusti's triple rolled all the way to the wall in right center.
Delta State put three runs on the board between the seventh and eighth against relievers and Brady Rodrgiuez.
Hahn gave up three straight singles to start the seventh before striking out Ben Kingsley. But the next hitter, Michael Vinson, ripped a RBI single to right that scored two runs after Schuetze booted the ball toward the gap.
Rodriguez surrendered a leadoff double to begin the eighth vs. Ben Pickard and watched him score on pinch hitter Jonathan Andrews' single up the middle. Rodriguez would allow one more hit before retiring five of the last six batters he faced, including three by strikeout.
Taylor finished the game with five stikeouts and Hahn had two.
Delta State left 12 runners on base despite recording 15 hits, nine of which were in scoring position when the inning ended.
The Wildcats return to action this weekend for a four-game series vs. Incarnate Word. Game times are Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
