Cowboys Fall To Texas-Tyler In Series Opener

TYLER, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team lost 10-0 to Texas-Tyler in the first game of its American Southwest Conference Championship Series on Friday night at Irwin Field in Tyler.

The game was a pitcher's duel between Eric Zamora and Chance Cotton until the bottom of the fifth inning. The game was scoreless when Will Allen singled and Chris Back walked to start the inning. Sam Lane then tried to bunt and Zamora's throw went into rightfield allowing two runs to score on the play and Lane went to third. He scored on a Jeff Kosta sacrifice fly. After two more singles, T.J. Martin hit another sacrifice fly.

The floodgates really opened in the sixth inning when the Patriots scored six times against five different Cowboy pitchers. HSU pitchers walked five batters and hit a man in the inning.

The 10 runs setup the run-rule which is in effect in the ASC playoffs and the Cowboys went scoreless in the seventh.

Cotton worked a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts. The Cowboys best threat came in the first when they loaded the bases, but couldn't scratch out a run. Cotton is now 8-2 on the year. Kevan House and Cayden Cuniff each had two hit for the Patriots.

Zamora took the loss allowing just one earned runs and striking out four over five plus innings. Brandon Bollinger, Parker Robinson, Alex Bradley and Ryan Reagor all worked in the sixth inning.

HSU is now 22-19 and will need to sweep on Saturday to continue its season. UTT is now 31-10 on the year. The first game is slated for 2 p.m. with an if necessary game to follow.
