Cowgirl soccer slams Methodist, meets rival in second round of NCAA Tourney

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons’ women’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship with a 3-1 win over Methodist University on Saturday at the HSU Soccer Complex.

HSU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as sophomore Morgan McAdams finished in the box just 3:53 into the game.

HSU added a second goal in the 13th minute when Kirsten Parrish headed home a Josey Meyer corner for her 13th goal of the season.

The game remained 2-0 through halftime but the Monarchs came out and Haley Bowles finished off a corner kick from Cheyenne Ferrin to cut the HSU lead in half.

In the 80th minute, Kenne Kessler put the game away with her 36th goal of the season.

Caitlin Christiansen worked the game in goal for the Cowgirls and had four saves. Emily Benton had six saves for the Monarchs.

HSU had a 25-7 advantage in shots and a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, The Cowgirls also had a 15-4 advantage in corner kicks in the game.

The Cowgirls (20-0) will play arch-rival Trinity in the second round at 1 p.m. on Sunday. HSU employees and students will get in free with an HSU ID and fans are encouraged to wear white. Trinity advanced with a 2-0 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor. Methodist closes its season with a record of 9-11.

The game will feature the top two scoring teams in the nation. This will be the 12th meeting between HSU and Trinity in the NCAA Tournament since 1999. HSU has a slight 5-4-2 advantage and advanced the two times that it went to penalty kicks.
