As long as senior Paul Davis is competing in the shot put for McMurry University, all record book entries need only be written in pencil. For the fifth time since the end of the 2012 season, Davis set the War Hawks indoor shot record in leading his team at the Kansas Jayhawk Classic.
Davis set the new record at 62’ 10” on the last throw of the competition. Davis opened with a pair of throws at right around 61 feet, followed by two consecutive fouls. His third effort was again around the 61-foot mark, before uncorking his record heave that was nine inches better than the previous record.
In other field events for the McM men, Chrs Veail was eight in the high jump at 6’ 4 ¾”. In the long jump, sophomore Isaac Hamilton was seventh with a leap of 22’ 9” and Desmond Williams 14th (21’ 8 ¾”). Junior Chris Ogle posted a jump of 45’ 7 ¾” in the triple jump.
On the track, Willie Poindexter was 15th in the 60-meter hurdles ina time of 8.75 seconds. Sophomore Victor Cruz was 12th in the 60 meter dash (6.99) and also 11th in the 200 meters (22.50)
Lance Andrews was eighth in the 400, crossing at 50.97 seconds. In the men’s mile, Brandon Porter was seventh overall in a time of 4:34.95 minutes. Freshman Scout Hale was 10th in the 800-meter run (1:59.40).
The men’s distance medley relay team – consisting of Hale, Joe Burgess, Keon Mays and Porter – was just two seconds off the school record, coming in at 10:44.57 minutes and placing fifth overall.
Junior Tiana Alexander earned 18th place in a crowded 60-meter hurdle field for the women, hitting the tape at 9.45 seconds. Jasmine Williams was 13th in the 400-meter race (1:00.85).
Freshman Kirsten DeFrance and junior Lauren Peery crossed in 11th and 13th place, respectively, in the women’s 800 meters. DeFrance had a time of 2:32.13, while Peery was at 2:37.88 minutes.
Alexander was fourth in the long jump with a mark of 18’ 1 ½”. Senior teammate Shanita Coleman was eighth (17’ 9 ¾”).
