FOOTBALL: Cowboys Fall To Mississippi College, 49-35
Hardin-Simmons’ football team fell to Mississippi College 49-35 in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Robinson-Hale Stadium in Clinton, Miss.
MC had a quick start to the game, taking the opening kickoff 65 yards in six plays and scoring on a Jonathaon Redd 3-yard run. On the ensuing possession, Jessie Ramos fumbled and Brooks Villareal scored on a 16-yard return to make it 14-0 just 3:24 into the game.
The Cowboys then regrouped and scored 28 straight points. Josh Christian scored on a 9-yard scramble after Jonathon Wilder blocked a punt and recovered it at the MC 8.
Conlan Aguirre then intercepted a MC pass and returned it to the 15 and HSU went 15 yards in two plays with Tevin Mitchell tying the game with a 2-yard run.
MC fumbled on the ensuing possession and Christian hit Spencer Ryan on a 34-yard touchdown pass on the first play to give the Cowboys the lead.
HSU’s defense forced a quick three and out and the Cowboys marched 68 yards in seven plays and Christian hit Ramos on a 40-yard touchdown pass. To make it 28-14 with 1:24 to play in the first quarter.
Redd then hit Keith Williams on a 63-yard touchdown pass and the Choctaws tied the game late in the second quarter when Trace Lane blocked a Brandon Abbott punt and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown.
HSU had the ball to start the second half, but a quick three-and-out set-up another punt that was again blocked and returned for a touchdown by Lane to give the Choctaws a 35-28 lead with 13:40 to play in the third quarter.
Tevin Mitchell then rushed for nine of 11 plays on a 75-yard touchdown drive for the Cowboys and scored from seven yards out to make it 35-35 with 9:33 to play in the third quarter.
HSU’s defense forced a fumble on the next possession, but the offense again went three-and-out and Nico Francino’s punt went negative two yards. The Choctaws scored in four plays on a Redd touchdown run.
HSU went three-and-out again and the Chcotaws were driving before Wilder intercepted a pass at the HSU six yard line to end a threat. HSU went three-and-out again and the defense held again when the Choctaws missed a field goal.
The Cowboys picked up a couple of first downs the next series, but settled for a punt. MC then went on a 11-play 64-yard drive but Abbott intercepted a pass at the HSU five to end another MC drive.
HSU went three-and-out again and punted back to the Choctaws and MC went 40 yards in seven plays and Zach Farve capped the drive.
The Cowboy defense forced five turnovers in the game and Wilder had a huge day with 10 tackles, an interception, blocked punt and two pass break ups.
Christian went 20-of-42 for 197 yards. Ramos had seven catches for 84 yards and Mitchell had 32 carries for 132 yards and two scores.
HSU is now 1-3 on the year and 0-1 in league play. MC improved to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in ASC action.
The Cowboys host Howard Payne at 1:30 next Saturday for homecoming.
