ABILENE, Tx - Winning requires a sense of unity, focus and direction, especially on the road. Add in pressure from the heart of district play, and a roaring thunderstorm rolling in over the gridiron; victory isn't happening without an A-game performance from the team's leader.
"When we were in that delay, coaches were trying to tell us stay calm. The elements don't effect us. Even in that delay we were relaxing, going over what we need to do coming out in that second half very strong," said Quarterback Lorenzo Joe.
Lorenzo Joe's stellar performance in Friday's 42-31 win at Odessa High willed them to a win, bringing the Coogs to 2-1 in district.
"I was really proud of him. He did a great job managing our offense, executing, he did a good job distributing the ball around," Coach Todd Moebes said.
Joe's career high rushing night rained all over Odessa's defense, an unstoppable 243 yards on 19 carries. After a lengthy lightning delay at halftime, Joe quickly recharged his cougars, by deciding to make the game his own.
"Its a team effort. You know without those guys out there, this award wouldn't be possible," said Joe.
With Lorenzo's 47 yard touchdown run in the opening drive, Joe put the Coogs ahead on the scoreboard and in their mindset. He finished with four total touchdowns and a midnight victory.
"He's a lights out player. If you need to get something done Lorenzo will get it done. It's a lot of fun just being able to execute our offense like we have in the previous games this season, and just the tempo offense we run in and just being so close to him and just being such a good friend to him," said senior Trey Dye.
"He's a fine young man and that's certainly something everyone notices. His athletic talents and everything else but he's probably a finer young man," said Moebes.
Joe's athleticism and talent have made him a spectacle game after game, but the way he owns the role he's given - whatever it may be- makes him virtually unbeatable. Athleticism aside, he has proved he leads the Coogs, regardless of his position.
