Eastland makes it official, hires Cliff Watkins as head Football coach

EASTLAND, Texas - Cliff Watkins' roots in Texas run deep and strong, probably stronger than you might think at first. From Breckenridge to Cisco, his latest stop is head coach of Eastland Maverick football.

In front of a packed room Friday, the Eastland ISD school board voted to formally hire Watkins as the school's AD/head Football coach.

"I'm very excited to be a part of it and keep that tradition alive," Watkins said Friday after the hiring.

Eastland went 13-1 and won the district title under Hulett last season.

Most recently, Watkins was the Offensive Coordinator at Midland Lee. The Rebels identity changed on offense when Watkins took over in 2013. Predominantly a run-oriented scheme, the look changed a pass-dominated offense under Watkins. Midland Lee averaged over 432 yards of offense per game last season.

Watkins coaching pedigree runs deep and strong. He worked with the man he's replacing at Eastland, Brian Hulett, at Cisco back in 2004. He was also on staff at Stephenville when the Yellow Jackets won the 3A Div. I state title just a couple years ago.

"We will be a spread football team, we will do whatever fits our personnel best. That's the kind of scheme I've been adapt to, but whatever best fits our football team, we will do," Watkins said.

Making his connection to the Big Country stronger, Cliff's wife is from Baird.

"Me and my family are very excited about the opportunity, its great for me. It's great for my family."
