SPRING, Texas -

Former ACU all-America golfer Alex Carpenter fired a 3-under-par 69 on Friday to finish in a tie for first place at the Tour pre-qualifying tournament at the Cypresswood Golf Club.

Carpenter finished the three-round total at 12-under-par and tied for first with former Texas Longhorn golfer Alex Moon.  Carpenter and Moon and the other golfers in the top 38 will now advance to the First Qualifying State, Oct. 15-18, at The Woodlands.

Carpenter had five birdies, one eagle and three bogeys in his round Friday as he simply needed to stay above water in order to advance.  His bogey-free round of 65 on Thursday put him in position to win the tournament.

"That round on Thursday allowed me to relax and just play (Friday)," Carpenter said. "The top 38 advance, so I didn't really win anything, but it's good to advance."
