ABILENE, Texas - 2012 KTXS Best of the best - High School Football Quarterbacks
Lorenzo Joe – Cooper Jr.
After finishing his sophomore season as the Cougars top receiver, the Junior made big strides as a signal caller throughout the season.
The future Texas Longhorn finished this season just shy of two thousand yards passing and over seven hundred rushing yards. Joe was selected to first team offense of district 2-5A.
Jake Bumgardner - Albany Sr.
Also finished just shy of two thousands yards on the ground in 2012. Bumguardner was one of the most consistent players at any level throughout the last three years.
Jake was talented enough to be an all state selection as a quarterback, safety, and punter/kicker. He earned countless recognitions across the state as an all-state utility player.
He combined for thirty six touchdowns in his senior season. He concluded an outstanding career as a Lion reaching the regional finals.
Colton Gayle – Cisco Sr.
Another talented senior that played at a high level both on offense and defense.
After helping Cisco reach the state finals in 2011 (2,150 combined yards, 21 total TD), the Loboes were eliminated in the Area round in 2012.
Gayle 2012 numbers aren't daunting (1,452 total yards 12 total TD, 8 pass TD), but his overall body of work in the last three years makes him worthy of mentioning in this list.
Chris Keesee – Brownwood – Jr.
Taking into consideration that Keesee moved to 2A to 3A from his sophomore to junior seasons, this Junior turned a lot of heads in 2012.
1,643 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and just five interceptions would be good for any player, let alone someone who made such a difficult transition
The Lions offense struggled in their Area round loss to Glen Rose, but have a lot to look forward to in 2013 with Keesee back under center next fall.
Baylor Mullins – Merkel Sr.
There are so many 2A players that play both ways that it's to not appreciate how talented certain players are.
Mullins earned KTXS player of the week with a heroic effort leading the Badgers in an upset win over Wall in the second week of the season.
The senior finished the year with over 1,000 yards in the air and on the ground (1,074 passing, 1,182 rushing). The son of Merkel's longtime head coach Kieth Mullins made his father proud becoming his dad's latest child to lead the Badgers into another deep postseason run.
Clint Lesley – Clyde Sr.
Lesley is one of many quarterbacks that did earn KTXS player of the week, despite countless outstanding performances in 2012.
In the Bulldogs 50-14 win over Lamesa, Lesley put up monster passing numbers. 22-28, 446 yards, and five touchdowns.
The senior finished the season with 2,013 passing yards, and 24 touchdown passes.
Clyde just missed out on a postseason berth, but Lesley's great season does not go unnoticed by our eyes.
TOP 5 OF 2012
#5 Jalen Garza – Anson Jr.
The junior missed his entire sophomore season with a broken collarbone watching his team suffer a winless season
In 2012, Garza emerged as one of the most dynamic dual threats in the big country.
He scored 31 touchdowns on the season and led the tigers to their first playoff win in over a decade.
#4 Taylor Grant – Wylie Sr.
Taking about a first year starter who ended up being the district 4-3A MVP.
Over twenty three hundred yards passing, 31 touchdowns in the air, and 8 more scores on the ground.
Grant was one of the best game managers in the big country, and he was a beast on third and fourth down helping the bulldogs reach the state quarters
The senior now trades in his pads for golf clubs. He returns to the Wylie golf team as the #1 player. Expect to hear from Grant went the state golf championships come around.
#3 Evin Abbe – Abilene High Sr.
Abbe led the eagles to a 12-1 season after a stellar junior campaign. Another great game manager who is fearless in the pocket.
The senior overcame difficult obstacles throughout the Eagles' run to the state quarters.
He kept the air attack going despite a season ending injury to Keevan Lucas.
The 2-5A offensive MVP tossed 29 touchdowns in his senior year, and passed Taylor Potts for most touchdown passes in school history.
#2 Dee Paul
Paul cemented himself as one of the greatest moguls of all time leading Munday to a state title in his senior year.
There were plenty of question marks about Paul's arm strength and accuracy coming into the 2012 season. His passing efficiently was stellar in 2012, 22 touchdowns and just four picks all year long.
He's arguably the most dangerous 1A player in the open field, finished just shy of two thousand yards on the ground with 32 rushing touchdowns, including three in the Moguls state championship win over Tenaha.
Now were all waiting to see where Dee where continue his athletic career in college, he has 9 state titles in track (that number is subject to change this spring).
#1 Hagen Hutchinson – Stamford Sr.
Hutchinson led his Bulldogs through a historic season, capping it off with one of the best performances in the history of the UIL state finals at Cowboys stadium.
22-30, 248 passing yards, 132 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns only begin to describe how great he was in the 1A division one championship. He also had 16 tackles, and the game winning interception to become the first player in the history of the UIL state finals to be awarded both offensive and defensive MVP.
The senior finished the year with 71 combined scores and over forty five hundred yards in his final season as the Bulldogs quarterback.
