Hardin-Simmons’ men’s soccer fell 2-1 in overtime on a goal off a free kick in the first round of the Division III Men’s Soccer Championship on Saturday night at McGinlay Field in San Antonio.
The Loggers scored first on a goal by Sam Zisette in the 17th minute.
HSU got the equalizer in the 38th minute when John Paul Lowenthal found Colyn Moore who finished in front of the net.
HSU had most of the run in the second half but never could find the net. In the overtime the Loggers got a foul about 20 yards outside of the box. On the free kick Eneko Bereziatua hit a high swinging ball to the left side of the box that Vincent McCluskey got a piece of and buried into the net.
The Cowboys outshot UPS 14-12, but the Loggers had the advantage 8-5 on goal. HSU had three shots in the overtime.
Michael Vargas had five saves for HSU and Nathan King four for the Loggers.
The Cowboys finished the season with a record of 11-4-5. UPS improved to 15-5 and will play Trinity in the second round on Sunday.
